This blog is aimed at musicians of all levels, from passionate part-timers to seasoned professionals. Whether you're aiming for stardom or simply want to elevate your local gigs, professionalism is key.
Why Be Professional?
Professionalism benefits everyone involved. It fosters a respectful and rewarding environment for musicians, creates a good reputation for you with promoters and audiences, and increases your chances of getting hired for better gigs.
What Does Professionalism Look Like?
Being professional goes beyond just showing up on time. Here are some key points:
Preparation: Arrive early, learn your setlist thoroughly, and understand the venue's expectations for starting times, quitting times, set lengths and breaks.
Communication: Talk to the venue staff about soundcheck procedures, volume levels, and anything else you need to clarify. Depending on the type of gig, communicating and understanding this before the gig date is fundamental.
Respect: Be mindful of other performers, the DJ, and the bar staff. Respect the sound crew who control your sound quality.
Flexibility: Be adaptable at festivals or opening acts where sound checks might be limited, among other things. For example, you may be given only a small part of the stage, etc. Be ready to adjust set times if needed.
Reliability: Tear down your equipment promptly and pay your bandmates fairly and on time.
Building Your Reputation
The music industry is a network. People talk! By consistently demonstrating professionalism, you'll build a positive reputation that leads to more opportunities.
